Sizing

Picking the right size

Get this right and everything else takes care of itself. Too small is a choking risk. Too big and they lose interest. Here is how we size at the market table.

Start here

How much does your dog weigh?

Pick a band and we will show you only what fits. Between two sizes, size up - they grow into it and it lasts longer.

Still not sure? Call Emily at (219) 384-1033, the store at (219) 213-2157, or bring the dog in.

This is the single most common question we get, and getting it right matters more than which cut you choose. A chew that is too big gets ignored. A chew that is too small is a choking hazard. Here is how we size them.

Why we price by weight

Just like finger prints, no two antler are the same. Length, diameter and shape all vary from one antler to the next, so grading them by length alone would be meaningless.

Instead we grade and price every antler by weight. When you buy a Medium split, you are buying an antler between 5.0 and 6.9 ounces — every time, regardless of what shape it happens to be.

Our size grades

Size Weight range Suits a dog around
Teacup 0.5 – 1.5 oz Under 10 lb
Petite 1.5 – 2.9 oz 10 – 25 lb
Small 3.0 – 4.9 oz 25 – 40 lb
Medium 5.0 – 6.9 oz 40 – 60 lb
Large 7.0 – 8.9 oz 60 – 80 lb
Extra Large 9.0 – 10.9 oz 80 lb and up
Jumbo 11.0 – 12.9 oz 80 lb and up

Burr runs heavier at every grade, because it is the densest part of the antler. A Small burr is 8.0 to 9.9 ounces.

The rule of thumb

Your dog should be able to hold the chew comfortably between their paws and get their mouth around it — without it disappearing into their mouth.

If it vanishes when they pick it up, it is too small. If they cannot get purchase on it at all, it is too big.

When to size up

Go one size larger than the chart suggests if your dog is a genuinely aggressive chewer, if they have destroyed chews you expected to last, or if you would rather err on the side of caution. A slightly oversized antler is safe. An undersized one is not.

When in doubt, go bigger

We say this often enough that it is worth putting in writing. Giving a large dog a teacup antler is a choking hazard. There is no equivalent risk in the other direction — a large antler is simply a longer project.

Puppies and seniors

For puppies still getting their adult teeth, and for senior dogs who have lost a few, hard antler may not be the right starting point at all. Look at yak cheese, cow ears, gullet strips or the Chewy Bull instead — all softer, all still natural, all in our Gentle Chews collection.

Always supervise

Whatever size you land on, watch your dog with any new chew until you know how they handle it. Take the antler away once it wears down small enough to swallow whole.

Still unsure? Call Emily on (219) 384-1033 or email [email protected] and tell her your dog's breed and weight. She will tell you exactly what to order.

Four rules

What we actually check

Weight bands are a shortcut. When someone brings a dog into the shop, this is what we really look at.

Rule one

Longer than their muzzle

A chew your dog can fit entirely in their mouth is a choking hazard. Hold it up next to their nose - it should be clearly longer.
Rule two

Thick enough to resist

A chew that cracks in one bite is gone in one bite. Thickness is what buys you weeks instead of minutes.
Rule three

Heavy enough to hold

Dogs pin a chew with their paws. Too light and it skitters away, and they give up on it.
Rule four

When in doubt, size up

An oversized antler is safe and simply lasts longer. An undersized one is a trip to the vet.

Sizing questions

The ones we answer every weekend

My dog is between two weight bands. Which one?

Size up. Always. A slightly oversized chew is safe and lasts longer - the only cost is a couple of dollars. A slightly undersized one is a genuine hazard.

What about a puppy?

Puppy teeth are sharp but their jaws are weak, and adult teeth are still coming in. Start with a split - the marrow is open, so they get the reward without having to fight the antler. Wait until the adult teeth are fully in before moving up to whole, burr or whitetail.

My dog is old. Is antler too hard?

Sometimes. Senior mouths often have worn or cracked teeth. A split is the gentlest antler we sell, and our Gentle Chews collection is built for exactly this. If there is any existing dental problem, ask your vet first.

Two dogs, two sizes. What do I do?

Buy for the bigger dog and supervise, or buy two. Never leave two dogs with one chew - that is where the arguments start, and where a chew gets swallowed whole.
